Special Olympics
Who It’s For
- This class is for athletes who have registered with the Special Olympics NWT (SONWT).
- If your athlete/skater would like to participate, please contact Lexie Letzing at sport@sonwt.ca.
Program Structure

Weekly group sessions led by certified coaches and supported by trained volunteers or Program Assistants

Emphasis on participation, encouragement, and skill development at all levels

Sessions are designed to be fun, safe, and inclusive, with activities tailored to each skater’s needs and abilities

Progress Recognition
- If the skater is participating in the CanSkate program, they will be eligible to earn CanSkate ribbons and badges (Balance, Control, Agility) as they complete each stage.
- Once all stages of CanSkate are complete, they may choose to move on to the STARSkate program for further development.
- Outside of CanSkate, Special Olympics skaters receive ongoing encouragement and individualized feedback from coaches, with a focus on personal progress and building confidence on the ice.

Adult Program
Who It’s For
- This program is open to adults of all skill levels, whether you’re strapping on skates for the first time, returning to the ice after a break, or looking to refine your technique.
- No previous experience is required — just a willingness to learn and have fun!
Program Structure

Skaters work on personal goals at their own pace, with guidance from coaches

Focused instruction combined with independent practice time

Basic skating techniques (forward/backward skating, stopping, turning)

Progress Recognition
- Adults who are participating in the CanSkate program will work toward earning ribbons and badges as they progress through the stages.
