StarSkate
Program Structure
- Skaters purchase their own ice time by selecting the days/seasons they want to skate.
- Lessons are delivered through a team coaching model. Your skater may work with multiple coaches each week.
- Lessons may be private, semi-private, or in small groups based on the skill or discipline being taught.
- Coaches invoice parents directly (monthly or biweekly) for private/semi-private lessons.
- The program includes on-ice sessions, off-ice warm-ups, and group development classes, many of which are built into your seasonal registration.
Season Breakdown
YKSC runs skating in four seasons:- Fall (September–November)
- Winter (December–March)
- Spring (April)
- Summer (July–August)
Disciplines Covered
- Freeskate – Jumps, spins, and choreographed solos
- Skills – Edges, turns, and skating precision
- Dance – Pattern dances set to music
- Artistic – Creativity, musical expression, and choreography
Assessment & Progress Recognition
- Skaters work through STAR 1 to Gold, with coaches assessing progress throughout the year.
- STAR 1–2 skaters may wear helmets or Ice Halos (padded headbands). Helmets are optional but encouraged at this level.
- STARSkate follows Skate Canada’s national assessment pathway. Testing is done either by YKSC coaches or through external evaluators.

Performances & Special Events
- YKSC hosts a variety of events throughout the season, including:
- The Ice Show/Showcase
- The Annual Skating Clinic
- The Territorial Skating Competition
Testing & Dance Partners
- Skaters in STAR 4+ may test with external evaluators.
- YKSC may bring in a dance partner to support skaters in learning pattern dances.
- When available, costs for dance partnering will be communicated in advance.
- At times, dance partnering and evaluations may be done solely by YKSC coaches.
Other Notes for Families
- Skaters may receive a freeskate program starting in STAR 3 and up. Freeskate program are choreographed by coaches and include jumps, spins, and field moves.
- Coaches will provide practice lists to guide skaters during self-led time, these may include text and picture references to help with understanding.
- Helmets are optional from STAR 1 onward.
